February 2004 Archives
Today is the start of probably many more sleepless nights for us and sore gums for Emily. But I can't help but be a little excited. It seems like such a landmark, like all the others yet to come; sitting up(we have almost got to the 'sitting up on own' landmark, but not quite as she is still a bit wobbly), walking, talking etc. She has had very rosey cheeks for ages now and has been chewing on anything she can get her hands on for the past couple of weeks, so we kinda knew it was approaching, and Warren even bought her a teething ring yesterday to satisfy her gnawing needs.
In one of her 'what can I chew next' moments she grabbed my finger today in an effort to chew that too and I felt a hard sharp edge on her bottom gum. There was absolutely no doubt what it was, no lumpy gum, just pure and simple toothiness! Although you can't see a tooth, its probably too tiny and not all the way through yet but Emily doesn't let me look in her mouth for long enough to see.
Its crazy how quickly time goes by, every time I look at her I can hardly believe she was in my tummy and now she is growing teeth!!
It's been a while, I'm sorry. I was knocked out with flu for most of January, and as a result, I've spent most of February trying to catch up with life.
Anyway, some good news to report. Shortly after my last post about the horrors of bathtime, we had a breakthrough.
Emily had a bath, and didn't scream once.
I didn't want to jinx us, so I didn't post straight away, but suddenly, the bath became an OK place to be. Not exactly laughs and smiles, but no more tortured screaming. Ever since that first 'quiet' bath-time, she's been as good as gold. She's even started grabbing her ducks, and splashing violently (although that tends to hit her up the face and she recoils in shock for a bit).
Even a mouthful of soapsuds as she chews on the ducks doesn't seem to put her off.
Now you know that since I've written this, tomorrow night's bath will return to the scream-fest, don't you?

It seems like ages since we began the mammoth task of weaning. But how do you really know what you are doing when you haven't done it before?! It really is a case of absorbing advice that comes in from many sources and filtering what you need, or are happy with, and the rest is just guess work. If Emily only knew that we didn't have a clue she would be packing her little bag and running off to some parents who already have 10 kids! Its just as well...
So the baby rice went ok and then a bit of yummy carrot that kinda went ok too, and so then onto lovely pear and apples. Now that she has a taste for the delicious fruit she no longer wants anything savoury. She keeps her mouth firmly closed shut when trying to spoon in carrots, potatoes, parsnip etc and when the pear and apples arrive she practically grabs the bowl from my hand!
So I thought as she likes her fruit so much I would try her with something different. Some yummy fresh bananas, pureed into a lovely mush. But nope, mouth closed firmly shut and not happy at all.
What can be possibly wrong with such a lovely fruit as banana - so yellow and so tasty? I guess, as Woz says, she must be a pearitarian. We will have to just be patient and hope she develops a taste for other stuff soon and in the meantime just hold our noses at those explosively fruity nappies.
I think mom must've realised that I had been feeling a bit grumpy lately. I suppose the first few months I was just running on adrenalin and just recently the effects of numerous sleepless nights, coupled with probably trying to do too much in the day (or so I'm told!) have started to take their toll.
So before I knew mom was on a plane and on her way over (while poor Nige stayed home to supervise the renovating of the bathroom!). It was lovely to see mom and for Emily to see Nanny, and vice versa. Emily changes so much all the time that it was nice that mom could see her at this stage. She even rolled over for the first time while she was here (thats Emily not my mom!).
We had a lovely time and shopped like mad on Monday, with Nanny spoiling her granddaughter of course! So thanks for coming over mom - you cheered me up, it was just what I needed.
Mom sent me pictures of me when I was a baby to see whether Emily and I share any baby characteristics. Have a look at the image below and I'll let you decide...
It was over a week ago since Lucy and Si came to visit from the far away land of London and I should've been right off the mark putting these pics up. But the days seem to have whizzed by, full of domesticity and baby mush, as well as playing nurse to poor old sick Woz. So here I am, at last updating you with some lovely pics. It was great to see Luce and Si and finally introduce them to our lovely daughter.
So click here to see pics from last weekend and more recent ones of Emily falling asleep in some funny positions! She gets cuter by the day...!
