February 2005 Archives
I think I spent my days in a constant cycle of 'Can you put that back please?' 'Can you shut that door?' 'No thats Daddy's', 'No thats Mommy's'. Its kinda cute to see Emily develop new skills and discover new things but its driving me totally crazy that she is in and out of the kitchen cupboards 90% of the day! Maybe because the kitchen was just fitted last week and its a new and exciting place for her. I even put all of her things in one cupboard so that she could play with them, but of course she wants the places with breakables!
It can be funny at times, but when you are tired and you have cleaned and put away things for the hundredth time it can get pretty frustrating. Its very testing to have a little one who's into everything. It brings a new meaning to the word patience.
The last few days Emily has been the sickest she has ever been in her first 16 months. General grizzliness turned to an incredibly high temperature (the thermometer was reading 40.7 at one stage, as we frantically striped her to her nappy and opened all the windows).
Thanks to the wonders of Calpol her temperature quickly came down to still hot, but managable). The worst part of it all were the heartbreaking looks she would give us while crying - a kind of a "Why do I feel like this? C'mon, aren't you guys going to do anything about this?".
All the time you are thinking about some technological advance where you can transfer the illness to yourself and take it off her. Children under 3 should have an amnesty against being sick.
It is so strange and amazing the connection that a mommy and baby have. I wonder if we always have this connection...I know that quite often when I phone my mom she says she knows that I was about to call, so maybe its always there..
Well last night, after decorating all night, having a bath and staying up till after midnight I was in a deep sleep when I woke at about 3.30am. I could hear Emily making very quiet vomitty noises. She was still quiet and didn't cry or call out, but for peace of mind I thought I had better check. When I went in she had been very sick and was completely covered - her hair, her cot, her sleeping bag, pj's, everything! The first time this has happened ( I don't count when she was tiny as she was always sicky with milk). So I had to wake Warren up, get her all changed, change the sheets, give her a wash (I would've bathed her if we had any hot water!) get a drink - and she seemed completely fine. In fact she seemed quite pleased that she was being fussed over in the middle of the night.
Its hard to say what may have caused it. It could've been something she ate maybe. Or she had her MMR on Monday (which went like a breeze and you would hardly know that she had a needle jabbed in her leg - I was very relieved) so maybe it has something to do with that. She appears to be fine this morning though and is in her usual jolly mischievous form, thankfully.
I am a bit late in posting this entry (two weeks to be precise!) but its better late than never and as it was a significant event I thought I had to write it, late or not!
A couple of weekends ago I had my first proper time away from Emily! A weekend in London to celebrate Lucy's big 3-0! Warren stayed at home to do the dutiful looking after Emily while I partied the weekend away! I was a bit nervous about being away from her for so long at first, but I soon got into the swing of having no responsibilities for the weekend, it was great! I think I really needed the break, especially with all the work we are getting done in the house - its been a testing time.
So thanks for holding the fort my lovely and thanks for a FANTASTIC weekend Luce, Si, Andrea and Julius! I can't wait to do it again...
